Dr. Mariano Samaniego

Dr. Samaniego was born in Sonora and moved to El Paso del Norte at the age of
fifteen. He was educated in Mexico City, France, and the United States. In 1859,
he became one of the first medical doctors and dentists in El Paso, Texas or
Ciudad Juárez. He held several political offices, serving as the Mexican
Vice-Consul to Franklin, Texas in 1872-73 and the Chihuahua State Governor in
1876. He died in 1905. The Samaniegos were one of founding families of El Paso,
Texas. The Stephenson-Flores
Family Papers, from which this photograph comes, is one of many collections
of manuscripts and photographs housed in the Special Collections Department.
